Some time ago I wrote a column http://www.lbo.lk/insight_fullstory.php?newsID=1760049024&no_view=1&SEARCH_TERM=24. about changing the time standard: It was a fun piece because I thought the whole thing was a joke or a smokescreen (for something like:http://www.lbo.lk/fullstory.php?newsID=1502185485&no_view=1&SEARCH_TERM=4
); and I couldn't care that much about which way the decision went.
But I am no longer amused. I am angry. Not because of the change, but because of the blatant lies and the contemptuous attitude behind it.
|
The return to Indian Standard Time (IST) exemplifies the pathology of our polity: politicians lie; officials lie; the government media lie; the real media and the people acquiesce. |
Japanese culture does not allow one to say no, it is said. Similarly, it may be that our culture does not allow us to utter truths.
But small lies can have large consequences. I think we're playing in blood for the culture of official, endemic, entrenched lying. I believe the culture of governing by lies has contributed to the start of Eelam War 4.
The small lie
When announcing the intention to change of the time standard the President was quoted as saying that the change was in response to a request by parents who did not want their children to go to school in the dark (http://www.lankabusinessonline.com/fullstory.php?newsID=524946469) .
Tilak Siyambalapitiya and others called the rationale into question; showing that the school times had been adjusted after we changed from IST and that the time between sunrise and start of school of exactly the same as before; saying that if there was a problem it could be resolved much easier by changing school times like in Nuwara Eliya, without raising energy consumption and making Sri Lanka look peculiar.
But the change was made, disregarding dissenting voices, ignoring the evidence that was presented: http://www.scidev.net/content/opinions/eng/science-loses-in-sri-lankas-debate-on-standard-time.cfm
And then, before we had barely finished resetting all our clocks, the other shoe dropped: all the starting times of schools and offices were advanced by 30 minutes. Bus and train timetables were to be adjusted accordingly.
No mention now of school children groping their way in the dark to get to school on time. No mention now that the time between sunrise and start of school is no different from it was before April 13th.
And nobody called them on the lie. Not one question by the media; not one voice raised in Parliament. The Government lied. The government media lied. No one cared. They got away with it. Whoever they were pandering to, mostly likely the troglodyte astrologers, got what they wanted. The people of Sri Lanka were lied to on a matter of minor consequence when the truth would have done just fine.
This is the way government works in Sri Lanka. Politicians lie; officials lie; no one holds them accountable.
I should know: when in government, I tried to give serious deadlines for various actions and even asked journalists to hold me accountable if they were not met. In one instance, when I missed the stated deadline for making the Public Utilities Commission operational by several months, no one held me to account, though I punished myself enough agonizing over the form of my mea culpa.
Large consequences
What does this have to do with Eelam War 4 and the increased sale of coffins?
The trouble with the culture of governing through lies is that it becomes second nature. You lie to your people; you lie to your subordinates; you lie to your friends; you lie to your enemies. After some time it becomes second nature; you don't even know you're lying.
|
So you lie about everything to everyone. You go to Geneva and you lie about disarming paramilitary forces. You come back from Geneva and lie about amending the ceasefire agreement.
|
Problem is that Mr Prabhakaran is not in the mood to play along in this one instance. He actually wants the government to deliver on what was promised in Geneva. He gets mad; he starts dispatching suicide bombers to army headquarters and blowing up claymore mines under troop vehicles.
At some point the international community will get sick of this too. What value are the words of these liars, they will ask. No more co-chairs; no more mediators; no more monitors.
And then we will be forgotten, like Afghanistan before 9/11, like Somalia for the past so many years. The bodies will pile up; the war risk insurance will kick in; those who can leave will leave; we will truly become a failed state.
If only . . . If only our leaders lived by the precepts they so piously recite, sometimes more than once a day . . . .
Musavada veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami.
Shall we start now, at least?
The Srilanka fit for a NAZI TERRORIST UNRULY FAILED STATE where only the SINHALA so called BUDDHISTS have all the rights by constitution and practically.
The International community, by turning blind eye to the continuing ETHNIC CLEANSING of TAMILS, MUSLIMS and CHRITIANS, indirectly ENCOURAGING the SRILANKA MODERN VERSION OF NAZI BARBARISM against Tamil Nation which was annexed with the Sinhala Nation by the UNDEMOCRATIC British Kingdom just 163 years ago without the consent of Tamils or Sinhalese or Muslims like they done recxently to HONGKONG people.
The only viable solution, to the Srilankan 58 year old BARBARIC ETHNIC CLEANSING of Minorities, is the separation of TWO DISTINCT NATIONS as existed for more than 3000 years or more before the UNDEMOCRATIC BRITISH INVASION.
We cannot forget the second part and still call Sri-Lanka, a democratic country.
How will the people who voted for the oppsosition feel if they are discriminated and oppressed by the ruling party?
Apply the same rules for the minorities. It is shame to call Sri-Lanka a democratic country.
YES SRILANKA IS A MAJORITY CONTROLLED DEMOCRACY USING THE SAME MAJORITY DEMOCRACY TO DENY THE DEMOCRACTIC AND HUMAN RIGHTS OF TAMILS WHO OVERWHELMINGLY VOTED TO PRESERVE THE RIGHTS TIME AND AGAIN BUT SRILANKA, FOR 58 YEARS, HAVE BEEN CONTINUING THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF TAMILS, MUSLIMS AND CHRISTIANS RATHER THAN RESPECT THE MINORITIES' DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS.
I agree that the LTTE prevented the Tamil voters in the North and East from participating in the 2005 election. But the fact remains that MR won it according to the Constitution.
We cannot change the past; we cannot change the LTTE's action. But we can hold our leaders here in the South accountable when they utter lies.
We need the help of the media to do this, for sure. Moves such as LBO opening up the site for comments enable us to act.
The next step is to get the conventional media to pick up the issues raised by readers in forums such as this.
Have you considered this? Don't forget that dear old Prabha boy elected our president by preventing the Tamil people from voting for the loser.
On one hand if he elected our president, he can hardly complain now.
On the other hand this may be exactly what the LTTE wanted.
Sections of the military running amok, killing civilians and children, no one brought to justice and so on.
In any case the Tamil people are getting increasingly alienated from the government in the South.
There is no hearts and mind campaign now. It is more like a heartless mindless campaign.
If you take a look at some of the other blogs on this site, relating to the conflict you see a deep polarization already evident.
There are moderates on both sides, but the vocal blog writers seem to extremist.
If there is moderate majority, they seem to be silent.
Prabhakaran lying has nothing to do with this ... He lies !!!!
The people voted the President & government in ...
The questions ..... Do we want our leaders to lie ???
Have we gone so low to think it is OK for our leaders to lie if the other side lies ???
Is Sri Lanka then a "Banana Republic" ???
I think Nalaka Gunawardene amply documents the efforts made by knowledgeable people to contribute to a discussion on the change to Indian Standard Time.
Other than a few snide comments in the Observer, there was no response; only a cabinet decision taken to implement the change.
The whole point of the column is that when lying becomes engrained in political practice, it affects everything, including the negotiations to end the conflict.
If there is no connection, I am wrong.
I hope I have made a persuasive case that there is one.
For democracy to work, people should organize themselves & campaign to bring their thoughts to action.
It’s the fault of the intellectuals of Sri Lanka that the country is in this state.
They have no love for the Mother Lanka.
They learn out of public money (free education) & then go abroad & live a luxury life.
They don’t care what happens to this country.
This kind of people gets elected because of their ignorance.
Since nobody listen to their voice, finally Buddhist Monks are actively promoting their views through a political party.
But what are so called intellectuals doing? What about their spine? Even though I also disagree with playing with the time zones & lying, it’s very inappropriate of you to drag the LTTE argument into this. What a Democratic Government executes is the majority view of the society (although this can be greatly influenced using public media). The thing is nobody actively & in an organized manner protested against this between the time period of announcing the plan & till it is actually put into action. Then whose false is it?
Ranil - have head, no spine
Mahinda - JHU, JVP head - no spine
Ratnasiri - no head, no spine,
If the government believes that Mr Prabhakaran is completely untrustworthy, there is obviously no point in negotiating.
But three different governments (CBK, RW and MR) have agreed to negotiate.
If you agree to negotiate, you must keep your word, especially if you are a government.
As someone said, one does not negotiate with friends, one negotiates with enemies.
With enemies, there is always the risk they will not keep their word.
In the midst of negotiations with the former Soviet Union President Reagan said what had to be done: "trust, but verify."
To negotiate effectively with the LTTE, it is necessary to verify; make sure that they keep their word. But lying to them is not going to make them behave any better.
In that case, better to stay out of negotiations altogether.
Lying already become second nature of our nation.
It's in our DNA, well embedded.
Robert Knox in his historical account of ceylon too has mentioned about this ingrained habit.

Do you think that your so called Mr.Prabakaran will keep his promises?
Do you think that when the government disarms all the paramilitary groups Mr. Prabakaran will welcome those men and treat them like his people..??
Government agreed only to disarm or stop the activities of these groups under areas where govmnt has the control.
“He actually wants the government to deliver on what was promised in Geneva.”
Only the government has to keep it promises is it..?? These comments of yours are biased.
At some point the international community will get sick of this too.
Sick of what? Terrorism.???
I believe it has arisen because of the divisions along party lines, where unintelligent masses rally around their leader no matter what is promised or uttered without holding them responsible for those very words later.
It is as if they are in need of emotional upliftment for the moment, in their already dreary lives. The answer to this problem could be a strong media, or a strong media organisation who will not boot lick, but expose the liars, and show to the country- in screaming headlines- what was said and what was actually done... just to show the people the duplicity...... Only when the voter base is influenced will the culprits try to mend their ways.... At the moment it seems a long way off.......
Don't expect politicians to do anything for the country or for the citizens because we as a public don't really expect them to and they know it!
And as a postscript, it's not whether we are 1/2 hour or 1 hour behind or ahead in time, it's just the whole principle of thing - and do we remind them about the earlier rationale/lies - NO!
We have a President who has no compunction about lying or breaking the law.
We also have a judiciary that panders to these liars.
And we have a servile public service whose backbone is made of jelly!
