Sri Lanka Telecom cuts rates
Sept 07, 2009 (LBO) - Sri Lanka Telecom, the island's dominant fixed line operator, said it was offering lower rates and discounts in new subscriber packages amid intensifying competition among phone companies.
In its new post-paid tariff plans called 'V talk', call rates to fixed and mobile phones have been reduced up to 35 percent and monthly rental reduced up to 48 percent, the company said in a statement.

"The new packages offer per second billing, low call charges, low rentals, flat rates, low calling rates for mobiles, and are also able to meet special requirements like fixed rate per call or fixed rate per minute options."

In one of the packages, subscribers can call any network, fixed and mobile, at just one cent per second, excluding government taxes, during the discount time band everyday between 9.00 pm to 5.00 am.

Another package offers subscribers a flat rate of nine rupees a call for up to 15 minutes (900 seconds) to any fixed or mobile telephone on any network at anytime. The rates are quoted without government taxes.

Some packages offer monthly rentals as low as 245 rupees.

"The new packages will be available for both new customers as well as for present SLT customers," the statement said.

Existing SLT customer switching to new packages will be charged a transfer fee while those sticking to their 'Home' and 'Business' standard packages will be given a monthly discount.

Sri Lanka has about 15 million telephone connections both fixed and mobile.

It is a sad story for SLT.

All these packages are not worth, when we compare with today mobile phone rates. Vtalk- Value package Peak Rate per minute is 3.60 + 1.50 = Rs. 5.10 per minute.
Vtalk- Active package Peak Rate per minute is 3.00 + 1.50 = Rs. 4.50 per minute.
All these charges are more than double when compare with of today mobile phone charges which is around Rs. 2.50 per mints or less.

So why we use Land phone? why we should pay more ?, I think customers are not aware about this. Telecom has put their all ads in cent per second basic to hide this truth. ( customer has to multiply it from 60 & device from 100 to see per minute charge.)

This is a good move but getting ADSL line from SLT is far harder than ever before.
